Caspersen Beach - Shark Tooth Hunting - Sarasota, Fl

One of our favorite day trips is Caspersen Beach, right below Sarasota, here in Florida.  It's a gentle, peaceful and quiet Gulf beach that is famous for it's shark teeth!

Seagulls at Caspersen Beach, Florida

From our house, it only takes around 1:45 to get there, and it's a nice, fast and easy drive on the highway.

Caspersen Beach Florida

We love Caspersen Beach because it is secluded, in it's still in it's natural state, and it has lots of shark teeth, and calm water!

Calm waters at Caspersen Beach!

Sometimes we make a weekend of it, and stay in a hotel in Sarasota.  When we do that we get to visit our favorite places like Yoders Amish Restaurant (featured on the Travel Channel) and Salty Dogs Cafe (Also featured on the Travel Channel).

Paradise!
We also love to go downtown and walk around and visit the various shops.  We found a great little French bakery that sells homemade Macaroons and chocolates in a wide variety of flavors.

Sarasota is a beautiful city, and just driving around near the bay will give you plenty of gorgeous views of bridges and clear gulf waters.

Mahnara at Caspersen Beach

We also love to go to the Mote Marine Aquarium in Sarasota (more about that in the future!).

Venice Beach is more well known, and is above Caspersen Beach.  It's way more popular though, and much busier.  Venice Beach also has shark teeth in it's shells and sand, and is actually called the "Shark Tooth Capital of the World".

Some of our Shark Teeth finds from Caspersen Beach

We choose Caspersen Beach because it's in it's natural state, with no high rise hotels or condos, or business.  Just you and the beach and the calm sea ☺.

We find this beach very special, like a little piece of paradise, right here in Florida.  It reminds me of the Caribbean Beaches I've visited on my many cruises.

Caspersen Beach at Sunset

What brought us to Caspersen Beach was the Shark Tooth hunting.  I thought it would be a fun thing to experience, and it was!

It's very easy, and anyone can do it!  You can find many, many shark teeth on the beach, there are hundreds (probably thousands of them!).

We stopped by a gift shop in the area and purchased this scoop.  It was about $22.00.  It has a long handle and the basket is large.

Scoop for Shark Teeth

Scoop for Shark Teeth Hunting
You just take it into the beginning of the water and scoop.  Scoop up the shells and sand.  I always look for the shells or areas that seem darker, because they tend to have more shark teeth.

Once you scoop up your load of sand and shells jiggle it around in the water to rinse the sand out.  Do that really well to remove all the sand, it makes it easier to pick out the teeth.

Once you have your basket of rinsed shells head over to the beach and dump them on a strainer, like the one below.

Strainer used for sifting through shells looking for Shark Teeth

We purchased that at the gift shop also, it was around $15.00.  Be careful ~ there are lots of neat things in those beach gift shops!  We ended up spending almost $300.00 on stuff!  The kids wanted fossils, shark teeth, shark tooth necklaces ... I got a bumper sticker, keychain, necklace ... too much stuff to list!  You may just want to grab your shark tooth hunting supplies and run, lol.

Shells and Shark Teeth Mixture

Once you dump your shell mixture on the strainer, just dig through it!

Mahnara looking for Shark Teeth!

You will find lots of neat shells, shark teeth and other things!  We found a lot of these little black things, like teeth but rectangular with grooves.  Someone told us they were from a Stingray (don't remember which parts, bone maybe?)

Shell and Shark Teeth mixture - pre-digging

Just pick the teeth out and sit them aside.  I have zip loc bags to put mine in, or you can use a bucket or other type of container.

Some of our Shark Teeth Finds

That's it!  It's as simple as can be!  (And SUPER fun!!!).

Sunset at Caspersen Beach

You will see many other Shark Tooth hunters our searching for Shark Teeth.  Some old, some young ... some with tools they purchased (like us) and some with really cool homemade tools.

A boy hunting for shark teeth

One man had  made a floating sifter.  He used pvc pipes and put those pool floaty noodles around the so that the thing would float, and of course he put some type of wire netting in the middle.  It was really neat because he didn't have to leave the water.

A man hunting for shark teeth

I personally liked leaving the water.  I enjoyed bringing my pile of shells and teeth back to my chair and enjoying the beach and my kids hunting and playing while I sifted through the shells.

It was truly and incredible and amazing, memorable experience and it's my favorite place to go here in Florida besides Walt Disney World ♥.

People Shark Tooth Hunting

If you have a Florida Family Vacation or Walt Disney World Vacation planned  I highly recommend a visit Caspersen Beach or Venice Beach!

Caspersen Beach

Whether you want to hunt for sharks teeth, swim, relax on the beach or enjoy a gorgeous Florida Gulf Beach sunset, this is the place!

Caspersen Beach Sunset

Make sure to bring a hat and wear plenty of sunblock (don't forget to reapply!), water and towels (there are outdoor showers).  It's secluded so you may want to bring lunch or snacks too.  I also suggest stopping by a store for some cheap bread.  It's super fun to feed the Seagulls!

More About Our One of a Kind Disney Family!

Hello!
This post is about us, the Living Disney Family of 5!  It's filled with more information about our unusual family, and is a continuation of where we left off HERE.

On  my last post I wrote about me, (Elizabeth, the younger sister), staying and living with my older sister Amy, and her son Trevon.

Like I said, I never left.  I have been living with them for 15 years!

Trevon, Zarius, and Mahnara

I know for a lot of people our story may seem strange, because it's different, and for a lot of people, different is scary.

Believe me, I have heard it all over the years.  The biggest speculation is that there is some kind of "relationship" between my sister and I.

I love to laugh at that one☺.

Zarius

So yes, I live with her and we co-raise our 3 children together.  No dads!

Let's go back about 12 years ... we had been working at a health food grocery store called Earth Fare, in Asheville, North Carolina.
We were both cashiers and absolutely loved our jobs.  We learned so much valuable information that helped to change our lives forever!

My mother babysat for Trevon while we worked.  We would always try to get opposite shifts so we could watch him, but that didn't always work out, so my mom spent time with him (which she loved!!!)

Working there for 4 years showed us how to eat healthy and live healthy.  Not only about natural and organic foods but essential oils, homeopathic remedies, and vitamins and other things like acidophilus.

Mahnara

We met so many nice people there, including a very nice lady who was pregnant.  She saw how wonderful, special and sweet Trevon was (he was about 4 then) and how good we were with working with children.  She knew we were good moms, you can always tell by looking at someones children.

The lady's name was Tracy, and her husband was a chiropractor.  She asked me if I wanted to be her nanny when she had her child.  Of course I said yes!

So that was the start our babysitting/nanny careers.  We love children and love teaching them.  We also wanted to be home more often so we could be with Trevon more.

So we stopped working at Earth Fare, I went to be a nanny (I went from $8.00 an hour at EarthFare to making 12 dollars per hour as a nanny, and I got to work for myself!) and Amy started watching children in our home.

Amy never watched more than 3 children at a time.  Usually only one or two.  We wanted to give special attention to a few children plus our own.  We didn't want to be a commercial daycare facility, or a large home daycare like most other people.
We wanted to offer a personal, loving home, that you could feel good about leaving your special child at.

What a wonderful way to work and support your family!  Amy and Trevon loved the children she helped raise.  We will never forget the special people we have met in our blessed lives, they were all special and we're so glad we got to be in part of their lives, and had an influence in their great beginnings.

It was a great choice and change in lifestyle.  Trevon had plenty of friends in the homeschooling groups that we got to take part in with our new life, and with the kids Amy had at her daycare.

Through the years, even though I love Trevon with all of my heart, I wanted to know what it was like to be pregnant and birth a child.  So 6 years after Amy had Trevon, we decided it was my time to have a child.

Trevon was always asking for a brother or sister.  I remember when we went to Disneyland when he was almost 5.  He made a wish in the Toontown Wishing Well.  I thought he would wish for toys or something, but he wished for a sibling.  It was so sweet!  To this very day, the younger 2 (Mahnara + Zarius) love knowing that their older brother wished for them!

So we researched and talked with our doctor and after months of waiting and wondering how, we decided on a way.

For almost a year I had a strong feeling about having a child.  I would have dreams of a blond small girl, I would go and buy baby clothes and cry at night because I didn't have that special someone to help me make a child.

I wasn't about to go out and date a random guy, or have an encounter and chance getting a disease or AIDs, just to have a child that I (we!) wanted more than anything.

But we wanted one so bad so our doctor recommended the California Cryobank.  What an interesting (and scary) idea for us!

Flashback Day #4 - Kissimmee, Davenport, Lake Mary? Where To?!?

Flashback Day!!!

Today is Flashback Day!
Flashback Day is a day I will dedicate my Disney Blog post to our story of Moving to Walt Disney World Florida!

I kept a journal, complete with pictures of our move to Florida and I'm going to share it all with you here!

It starts 4 weeks before we moved to Florida, back in 2008, when we were in Asheville, N.C. and decided to make our Dream Come True by moving to to the Walt Disney World Florida area!
Salem ~ he's my dad's cat (used to be ours, but my dad loves him and he loves my dad so he changed families).  He really LOVES Florida (esp. the lizards!)

Flashback Post #4

Journal Entry Date: 12/6/08

Title: Kissimmee , Davenport, Lake Mary?  Where to?!?

Journal Entry:

Okay, so I'm really considering homes in Kissimmee and Davenport.
I found a couple of really nice ones but they are in resort communities.

It sounds great, I don't mind living in a resort community with a beach, pools, clubhouses, movie theater and a nice house with a pool.

The bad thing about that is that the homes next to you may be short term rentals. Which means that they may be empty or you will have new neighbors every week or two.
They could be loud and into parties or quiet and spend their days at the parks.

Personally I don't think this sounds bad at all, although from what I've read on forums (City-data), that's a downfall for most people.

I found a beautiful 4 bdrm/4ba with pool and hot tub and 2200 sf, brand new for $1200. a month. We would be 20 minutes or less to the parks.  Sounds perfect to me!!

When we stayed at Hapimag Resort in January 2008, on a Walt Disney World vacation we noticed there were the Town Houses up front (it was a gated community) and in the back of the community they had a lot of nice homes.

We drove around one night and wondered why some homes had Christmas decorations up, like they lived there long term, and some had lots and lots of cars in them like they were having a party.
You could clearly see that some were permanent residents and some were short term rentals.

I didn't see a problem with that area, I really liked the development and thought that is would be a nice place to live.

Unfortunately I don't have much time left to research as I have to get packing starting tomorrow. So much to do!

*Oh ~ our other option is living 40 minutes from WDW in Clermont or Lake Mary .  Those areas have been recommended to me a lot by other members who live in the area on DIS and on City-Data forums.

So many choices, too bad we can't go and visit the areas we're interested in!  It's hard having to choose the area and house we are going to be moving to without seeing them first!

Interactive Disney Games ~ More Tips ~ Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom

What Fun!  Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom at Disney Magic Kingdom are totally awesome Disney Games!

After going back for more of the fun and addictive interactive game, we find out even more exciting information.

Click HERE for our first post, all about the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom game!

The SofMK is the new family attraction at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.  It takes you around the park on a spell casting adventure.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Poster

As we stand in line waiting for our turn to fight the villains, we are surprised by all of the nice people we meet.  It is a great time to talk about the game and trade extra playing cards.

One of my favorite things to do while playing is trying out new card combos.  We love to see how the cards will work together and how they don't.

Frontierland Portal in the Disney Magic Kingdom

Here are some more tips that we have learned playing the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.

  • Make sure everyone in your party goes into the Firehouse and gets game pieces.  Even if you don't plan on playing you can give your extra cards to your kids who are planning to play.

  • If you are planning on staying together in a group, and don't want to split up, ask to play together at the same lands.

  • Make sure you stand on the SMK symbol that is on the ground in front of every portal.  It will help ensure that the cameras read your cards properly.

The Crest to Stand On in front of the Portals.

  • Respect peoples space and be patient.  We are all trying to have fun and play the game.

  • Have fun and talk to the people around you in line at the portals.  Ask if they have any extra cards to trade.

  • You can use up to 6 cards at a time and every time you use the same card it gets leveled up more.  So the more you play the stronger you get.

  • Be adventurous and try different card combos.  My favorites are Aurora and Prince Phillip, or Lumiere and Robin Hood.

  • For more card trading fun, visit the Tortuga Tavern, where people sit at the tables and trade cards with you.

  • There are 4 different types of cards.  They can be super rare to common, depending on the symbol in the bottom left corner.

Check back tomorrow for more information on the cards and the card combos.

Have fun playing the game!

Disney's PhotoPass - Digital Photography Tips

Disney PhotoPass is a great way to capture the special moments of your Walt Disney World Vacation.  It's one of my biggest Digital Photography Tips for Walt Disney World!

We had this photo taken by a Disney Photographer at the Magic Kingdom with Our Camera

You will find many opportunities to use your PhotoPass at Disney Epcot, Disney Magic Kingdom, Disney Animal Kingdom, and Disney Hollywood Studios.  You can also use your Photopass at the Disney Resorts!

All you need to do is ask any Disney Photographer in the parks or the resorts for a Photopass Card.  It's free of charge!

Keep your card somewhere handy and use it every time you see a Disney Photographer!

Disney Photopass Photographer

They are stationed at every park icon, and throughout the parks in scenic areas and the Character Meet and Greets.

* Digital Photography TIP *
Ask the Disney Photopass Photographer to take a picture of your group with your camera too!!!
They will always gladly take a picture for you with your camera before, or after, they take one with their camera.

This picture was taken by a Photopass Photographer with Our camera

When you see a Disney Photographer and you want them to take a picture of you or your family, just hand them your card.  They will scan it and take your photos.

I suggest having multiple photos taken, with different members of your family.  You can have some photos with just the kids, and some with the family!

Make sure to try different poses, as some might be better than others.

One of the fun things about the Photopass is having Disney Characters added to your photographs!  They can add your favorite characters to your photos to make them more fun!  Just ask a Disney Photographer about it, they will help you with your poses for that special shot.

Disney's Photopass Photographers

Throughout your vacation use your Photopass and once you're back home you can enter your information online and see all your photos!

You can pick the ones you like and purchase those or have special keepsakes made from them.

One of the most popular items is the Disney Photopass CD!  It gives you every picture you had taken on your vacation, including the rights to them (the rights are limited, but you can print them off!).

You can order the Photopass CD before your Disney World Vacation to save time, and a lot of folks do that.

Make sure to get lots of photos taken whenever you have the opportunity and as always, Have Fun ☺

Get pictures of your family individually, and together!  The more photos the better! (This Photo Was Taken by a Disney Photopass Photographer with Our Camera)

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom - New Disney Magic Kingdom Attraction

The kids and I wanted to try the new interactive Magic Kingdom attraction, Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, so last night we went to my favorite theme park, Disney Magic Kingdom.
Magic Kingdom 3/25/2012

They were open late (or I should say early) until 12am, with extra magic hours for Disney World Resort Guests until 3am!

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Map

Upon entering the park we headed over to the old Firehouse on Main Street and got in line.  There were about 5 people in front of us and it was about a 10 minute wait.

Cast Members at the Firestation on Main Street giving you your Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom suppiles
Once it was our turn we were directed to a CM.  We had to show our park tickets to the Cast Member to get started, it's required, so make sure you have them before getting in line.  They actually link your park ticket or annual pass to your portal key card!

☺      ♥      ☺      ♥      ☺      ♥      ☺

*TIP*
If you're going to be staying together in a group, going to the same areas of the park together, then make sure to have your game set up as a group.  You will still each get your own cards and Portal Key, it will just keep you all in the same areas on your quest, and not send each person in your party to a different land and split your group up.

♥      ☺      ♥      ☺      ♥      ☺       ♥

In the game you are given a pack of 5 random cards (think trading cards like Pokemon), a Portal Key card and a map.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Portal Key, Map, and Playing Cards

The Cast Member goes over the game play with you and gives you some basic tips and sends you out to start your quest.

Portal

As soon as we left the Firehouse we went over to a bench to open our card packs to see what we got.  We were immediately approached by an older couple from Canada that asked us if we had any "trader cards", or extra cards for trading.

My portal key and 5 character spell cards

We told them it was our first time playing and it was our first deck of cards.  Apparently you can get 1 pack of cards PER DAY.

Zarius ended up trading his Tinker Bell card to them for a Wall-E card, which made both parties happy.  They were getting ready to head home and wanted to complete their collection.  They had all of their cards in a card binder and a list of the ones they needed.

There are 70 different cards in all ~ so collecting them all is quite a chore!

After speaking with this couple (and our experiences the rest of the night) we quickly learned that this new "game" would become very fun and addictive to a lot of guests of all ages, young and old.

Main Street Fire Station - Home of the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom

The great thing about this game is that you don't need all the cards.  You only need the 5 you start out with.  You don't need to be a collector, unless you want to.

We're still getting the hang of the game and I'll post updates here as we play more.  We're actually going back to Disney Magic Kingdom the day after tomorrow just to play the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom some more!

To play you scan your Portal Key card and hold it in front of a key symbol in special places throughout the park.

Portal in a store on Main Street
It's like a scavenger hunt, there are multiple portals in the lands and you have to walk around and look for them and find out which one you're supposed to be using next.  The only land that does not have a portal is Tomorrowland.

You follow the directions given to you by Merlin during one of the interactive "shows" you watch after you've scanned your Portal Key.

There is a story, complete with villains and you must cast spells (use special attacks), with your cards to defeat them.

This is where having more cards comes in handy.  For actual game play some say having more cards is better because you can use combinations, like two cards in a row.

For example, someone at the Main Street Jewelers told us that one of the funniest combinations is Pumbaa and Merlin, because Pumbaa has a gas attack and Merlin has a fire attack.  Combine gas and fire and .... well, you get the point ☺.

Portal on Main Street, telling you to Cast a Spell (use a character spell card)

The game gets more difficult and challenging the more you play it, which keeps it new, interesting and fun!

If you have a Florida Family vacation or Walt Disney World vacation planned make sure to play the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom game when you go to Disney Magic Kingdom!
